with new construction underway in the foreground, attesting to the building boom that has
accompanied the oil windfall in many Siberian cities.

picturesque, state of dilapidation and disrepair, though most of the churches are being restored.

Back in the new town of Tobolsk: evidence that socialist realism
never died; it just turned into bank advertisements. I couldn't decide if this was meant
to be kitsch, or to evoke past greatness -- perhaps both.
