Gallery 1: St. Petersburg
"... The town remains the most perfectly planned and most impressively classical city in Europe,
and its beauty is a supreme monument to the individual genius of the Russian aesthetic."
- Robert Byron, 1933
The soaring Church of the Resurrection of Christ, built between 1883 and 1907
(also visible in the rear of the preceding photo).
This street sign is a relic of the World War Two siege of what was then
Leningrad; it warns pedestrians to walk on the opposite side of the street
when an artillery
bombardment is underway.
