Indochina 2009

These photos were taken during two months in Indochina
(Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam) from May to July 2009.
Photo Gallery 37: Laos - Phonsavanh and the Plain of Jars
This gallery: the Plain of Jars and its ravishing, bomb-ravaged scenery. There are five principal sites
for the jars, most of which were carved out of granite or a rock akin to limestone; only three are open to the
public, owing to UXO concerns (exploding tourists make bad press).

This photo and the next: taken, if you can believe it, at the Phonsavanh tourist office
en route to the Plain of Jars. Is there any other place in the world where war scrap occupies so prominent
a place in local life and lore?
