These children had covered themselves with a mixture of cane syrup
and ash for the first day of Carnival, January 6, 2002. Quite a sight.
Crowds celebrate Carnival in the streets of Jacmel.
The Jacmel pier is being refurbished in the expectation (hope?)
of increased tourist traffic.
We were told that Haitians often build tombs bigger, and more expensive,
than their houses, for fear that if the tombs are not strong enough, evil spirits will
enter them and transform the dead loved ones into zombies.
One of the grand old turn-of-the-century mansions in Jacmel,
now a hotel.
This is the only photo of me from the Haiti trip that I'll impose on you.
