This picture gives a good idea of the scale of deforestation
in the Haitian countryside.
The city, Haiti's second largest, is an attractive blend of French
and Spanish colonial architecture.
One of the three ruined colonial-era forts on the western
outskirts of Cap-Haïtien.
Miriam standing by a really impressive bit of flora. Note the clothes
drying on the cactus spines.
One of my favourite photos of the trip.
En route to the Citadelle (see following gallery), we paid extra
to ride up front in the truck. A Haitian woman in the rear handed her baby
through the window and asked Miriam to hold him for the duration
of the ride. We were both wondering whether the mother would still be on
board when the journey ended. Our paranoia was unjustified. Miriam looks
so lovely here.
