I have travelled in about 70 countries on every populated continent, and I think I may have found the place where I'd like to retire someday (and vacation regularly in the meantime). Alta Gracia is a beautiful small city only 35km from Córdoba; it grew up around the large Jesuit estancia that figures in the next gallery of photos. It was also where the family of future guerrillero Ernesto "Ché" Guevara moved, in the hope that the dry climate would help their son's asthma. The museum housed in the old family home now vies with the Jesuit mission as a tourist attraction. Ché's nanny, 88 years old and (judging from a video in the museum) still sharp as a whip, lives hereabouts. The countryside in the first couple of photos lies only a ten-minute walk from my hotel, which was in turn just ten minutes' stroll from the center of town. What a spot.
