Cachoeira and São Félix (1)

... And the trip concludes, with a visit to two towns in the lush heartland
around Salvador called the concâvo, home to the sugar and tobacco plantation
economy of the colonial period. Cachoeira is known as "the jewel of the concâvo,"
and is simply one of the most beautiful and captivating small towns I have visited
in the Americas. Its twin, São Félix, sits across the Rio Paraguaçu, linked by a rickety
bridge built by the British in the 1880s.


I.

I stayed in Cachoeira in the Pousada do Convento do Carmo, a former convent attached
to the lovely 18th-century Igreja (Church) da Ordem Terceiro do Carmo. The pousada is visible
to the right of the church in the photo below, and is followed by an interior shot of the hallway
outside my room, and a photo of the church taken from inside the pousada. 250-year-old walls
and hardwood floors, 15-foot ceilings, and a fine buffet breakfast, all for US $25 a night.
Manfully, I reminded myself that such arduous conditions build character ...
