This photo and following: several views of the stunning Igreja
São Francisco de Assis, built between 1749 and 1774, "the tallest baroque
church in Brazil and possibly in all the Americas" (Moon Publications:
Brazil), with a gallery of immense palm trees donated by the Emperor Dom
Pedro II in 1838. The combined effect is unlike anything else I saw in Brazil --
pure majesty. The photos were taken at last light, a few minutes before sundown.
