Gallery 18: Listvyanka / Lake Baikal
We now reach the easternmost point of our journey ... Listvyanka is a charming
little village of 2500 souls on the shores of Lake Baikal, the world's largest and deepest body
of fresh water (larger in volume than all five of the Great Lakes combined). It's a place that's in
danger of being spoiled by the flashy dachas (holiday homes) and disco-blasting offspring of Russia's
idle rich, but meanwhile we found it a nice balm after a series of large cities.

Listvyanka viewed from the balcony of the chalet we rented. Lake Baikal in
the near distance, but too misty to be seen.

Every time we passed this Russian truck on our way down to the lake,
it reminded me of something out of a Stephen King movie.

A vendor of omul, the famed smoked fish from Baikal
(and very tasty it is, too).

This photo and following: the region around Baikal is renowned
for its shamanist tradition; these handsome masks were for sale at the local market.
