After the communist seizure of power in 1945, a reign of terror was instituted.
Hundreds of opposition political figures and leading intellectuals were rounded up
and interned in prisons and labour camps. The most notorious detention facility was
Sighet Prison, where high-profile prisoners including Constantin Bratianu, leader of
the National Liberal Party, were incarcerated. Many died from cold and privation,
including a starvation diet of 700 calories a day. After the 1989 revolution, a memorial
museum was opened on the former prison grounds.
