The Uyuni salar (salt flats) are the largest in the world -- some
12,000 square kilometres. They are mined by the residents of Colchani, on
the edge of the flats.

A couple of months before my visit, five foreign tourists had cycled out
onto the flats without a guide, got lost, and froze to death during the night.
