(Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam) from May to July 2009.
Photo Gallery 53: Vietnam - Quang Ngai
Quang Ngai is a nondescript city on Highway 1, the base for visits to the nearby My Lai
massacre memorial site (see next gallery). It also may be the single friendliest city I have ever visited in
my life. We literally could not walk a block without half a dozen people hailing us with ringing "Hellowwwws,"
and the smiles in some of these photos speak for themselves.

I also saw more public-service materials regarding Aids in Quang Ngai than in the rest
of Vietnam put together ... perhaps related to the striking number of massage parlours in town, including
one on the top floor of our hotel. (The city is booming as a service centre for the offshore oil inndustry.)
