Certainly one of the most beautiful faces of the trip: again from the evening market.

This photo and following: in Wat Xieng Thong temple, considered the finest in Luang Prabang (and the only
one spared a sacking in the 1887 invasion by Black Flag forces from northern Vietnam). Construction began in 1560,
with additions made through the twentieth century (including the delightful mosaic scenes of village life sampled here).

The "Red Chapel" (so called by the French) "contains an especially rare reclining Buddha
that dates from the construction of the temple. This one-of-a-kind figure is exquisitely proportioned in classic
Lao style ... Instead of merely supporting the head, the unique right-hand position extends away from the head
in a simple but graceful gesture." (Lonely Planet)
