(Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam) from May to July 2009.
Photo Gallery 17: Cambodia - Angkor: Day One - Angkor Wat
I feel about the magnificent ruins of Angkor, built between the 10th and 12th centuries,
more or less how I feel about Machu Picchu in Peru: that every possible angle has already been photographed
half a million times. In the galleries that follow, therefore, I'll be restrained, and present images that seem
to me to capture something of what made the place(s) special for us. The site is vast -- some 200 square kilometres --
with a population in its heyday estimated at 750,000, probably twenty times larger than any European city at the time.
We spent three full days touring it, without losing interest for a moment.
We begin with Angkor Wat, the largest temple in the world, and the heart of Angkor; built in the late 12th century.

Angkor Wat appears on the Cambodian flag -- the only flag in the world featuring a building.
