The French embassy in Phnom Penh. Though it has undergone extensive renovations
since, this is the building in which hundreds of foreigners and Cambodians sought refuge after
the Khmer Rouge seizure of power on April 17, 1975. Those of you who have seen
The Killing
Fields will remember the heartstopping scenes set in the embassy, as the Khmer Rouge forced
all Cambodians to leave, including the film's hero, Dith Pran. Many were executed within hours; next
to none survived the four years of Khmer Rouge rule (1975-79).

Please leave all guns, bombs, and swords outside ... Cambodia remains awash with
arms from decades of civil war and genocide. An AK-47 automatic rifle can be bought
in the market for around $20.
