South India 2008

These photos were taken during two-and-a-half months in South India
(states of Karnataka, Goa, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala) from June to August 2008.
Gallery 27: Thrissur and Kozhikode
Thrissur and Kozhikode (the latter still widely known as Calicut, whose widely-
traded cloth gave the English language another word -- calico) are somewhat off the tourist trail.
But they are two of the major labour-exporting cities in Kerala, and the flood of remittances from
the Gulf countries has entirely transformed the commercial scene and the lives of the inhabitants.
"Gulf mansions" are everywhere, and jewelry shops abound.

Kuttichara district in Kozhikode is home to several ancient mosques, reflecting its
millennia-old ties with the Middle East.

This photo and the next: the largest and most beautiful of the Kuttichara mosques,
Mithqalpalli, built in the fourteenth century. For someone raised on crescens and minarets, the
architectural overlay of the Keralan style (Mediterranean-style tiles and overhanging gables)
is quite striking.

A glimpse of commies and coconuts to round things out.
Th-th-that's all folks! Farewell India -- see you again soon!
