These photos were taken during two-and-a-half months in South India
(states of Karnataka, Goa, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala) from June to August 2008.


Gallery 19: Mamallapuram


I.

This photo and following: temple architecture, bas reliefs,
and stone carvings in the central area of Mamallapuram. Most of the works are
ancient, completed under the Pallava dynasty, fifth to ninth centuries AD.

This huge boulder is known as "Krishna's Butter Ball."

This photo and following: the Crocodile Bank near Mamallapuram, a rather striking collection
of literally thousands of the beasts, reared for preservation and protection as endangered species.
