town in the region, now lapsed into a sleepy splendour.

This old sea-salt, whom I met in a local restaurant, is a veteran
of the Angolan war of the 1980s, where tens of thousands of Cuban troops fought
to stem the tide of South African expansionism, and thereby helped to hasten the end
of the apartheid regime. Something of a hero, in my view.
