Photo Gallery 7:
São Francisco do Sul (1)

Photos by Adam Jones

São Francisco do Sul, located on an island about an hour's ride from Joinville,
is the third-oldest city in Brazil, founded in the 1540s. In the eighteenth century,
it was possibly the most important whaling port in the world, the hub of an industry
that supplied most of the world's whale oil and other products (and wiped out most whales
in the southern Atlantic). Today, it is a charming and friendly place undergoing major
restoration following its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This very handsome gentleman assured me he was no less than
eighty-two years old. Must be something in the water hereabouts ...
