Photo Gallery 1:
São Paulo (1)

Photos by Adam Jones

These photos were taken on a July 2006 visit to Brazil, travelling from
São Paulo to points south, to the state of Minais Gerais (General Mines), and to
the historic city of Salvador, heart of Afro-Brazilian culture, in the northeast.

We begin with two galleries of photos from São Paulo, the biggest city in the southern
hemisphere -- 18 million people in the greater metropolitan area. It's not much of
a tourist town, but I was drawn by its street life and undeniable commercial vitality --
this is the financial heart of South America, and by far the most ethnically diverse major
city in Latin America, with more than a million people of Japanese descent alone. It is not,
however, without problems befitting its size. Just a few weeks before I arrived, hundreds
of people had been gunned down on its streets, in running battles between police and gangs from
the favelas (slums) that ring the city. Numerous human-rights observers accused
the police of exacting indiscriminate revenge for gang attacks, killing family members of
suspects and, in some cases, any young man in the wrong place at the wrong time.

North American travellers are a rare sight here!
