La Plata

La Plata, in the province of Buenos Aires, is a pleasant university town
an hour's train ride southeast of the capital


I.
"Accepted here ... but not for cigarettes,
[because] the distributors won't take them"

In the face of Argentina's all-consuming fiscal crisis,
provincial governors began printing their own currencies; these notes
remained legal tender at the time of my visit, though there were plans
to phase them out.
