Faces of Paraguay (1)

I've found Paraguay strangely captivating for a long time, and was glad to be able
to delve briefly into the country. These two galleries mostly try to capture something
of the spirit of a people who struck me as very gracious and friendly, if less demonstrative
than their Argentine counterparts (who isn't?). For some idea of the very beautiful landscapes
of southern Paraguay, see Gallery 13 and Gallery 14.

One of the distinctive features of this region (including northern Argentina) is
the ubiquitous presence of mate and tereré, respectively the hot and cold
versions of the tea made from the yerba mate plant. You sip these drinks from a
small gourd, through a straw-like device that filters out the plant fragments. Every second
person on the street or sitting in the park will be sipping their mate and tereré
or preparing to do so, with their thermos of hot or cold water close at hand. You can spot
the trend in a number of these photos ...
